Solid Social Studies Program
- 6th grade classes started the first semester learning about cultures, physical geography and their environment. Once they mastered these topics they were ready to go around the world in 180 days and what a trip it has been! From North Africa, Southwest Asia, Asia, Europe, Russia and the Eurasian Republics. The 6th graders have learned to appreciate the cultures and sites of each region. Mr. Reyes has shared many of his souvenirs and
experiences which he acquires while traveling the globe as a member of the U.S. Air Force. - 7th grade classes have learned about the regions of Texas, Native Texans, early explorers, Texas under Spanish rule and the Age of Impresarios. Students then studied the Road to Independence and how Texans won their independence from Mexico. Students also learned about the Lone Star Republic, Texas as a state and Texas’ role in the Civil War. The second semester promises to be just as interesting, informative and exciting as the first semester.
- 8th grade classes have learned about the First Americans, Colonial America, The American Revolution, The Jefferson Era, Jackson Era and about Manifest Destiny. They are learning by “leaps and bounds” and are poised to do as well as last years class on the TAKS test. (100% for the Class of 2009!) By using the new AVID skills learned at workshops and strategies such as writing acrostic poems, I am .. poems, Haiku, and creating charts featuring political cartoons, graphs and questions. All of these have led to acquiring a greater understanding of the material presented. Extensive use of the computer lab, compass lab and tutorial computer programs are preparing the 8th graders for TAKS, High School, and College. Lasara, you can be proud of the solid Social Studies program your children are involved in! “We might not be in a class of our own, but it doesn’t take long to call the roll!”
